Winchester in the Civil War
As regional capital, the town of Winchester held strategic importance in Hampshre. Located between the solent ports and on the road to London, the town was a scene of constant action as the fortunes of war ebbed and flowed across the south of England. Held originally for the King, Winchester changed hands several times before the final siege in 1645. Sir William Ogle, defending the castle surrendered to the troops of Oliver Cromwell to avoid a bloody end to conflict. In conjunction with Winchester City Council, Museums Service. On Sunday 27th March 2005, civil war soldiers from Sir William’s garrison are guarding the west gate approach to the city and will be on hand to demonstrate their skill at arms, entertain you and share their knowledge of the English Civil War.In essence, the event will comprise:
