Opportunities for Local Groups to Get Involved
The Battle of Cheriton Project Limited, a company limited by guarantee, has been established to raise the profile of an important battlefield – the site of the Battle of Cheriton – and to enlighten the public about the momentous events that unfolded across the local countryside during the English Civil War, some 360 years ago, by means of an interactive educational programme, improved public information and weekend events.
The Project has brought together a wide range of partners in a unique collaboration. Local landowners, voluntary groups and the local authorities have contributed to the successful events of 2004.
Due to the success of last year’s events, the Project has decided to extend our activities into 2005. This year will see events in Winchester, Alresford and further school visits and will culminate with a battle re-enactment over the August Bank Holiday (28th/29th August).
The event will be fantastic. Not only will there be 3,000 civil war soldiers and the largest cavalry battle in southern England since the civil war, but also Norman and Saxon soldiers, medieval archers and knights and of course the modern day army with their outward bound activity centre. Supporting this non-stop procession of displays and battles will be craft fairs, stalls, games and other activities.
We are very keen to offer the opportunity to be involved in this event to the local communities. Experience at other historical sights has proven that the involvement of local groups enhances the overall experience for residents in the area.
So how could you get involved?
Why not run a stall or activity stand or assist with the organisation of the event? We also need stewards and support staff. Or why not run your own associated event?
Recognising the effort we are asking for, we are prepared to make appropriate contributions to any organisations able to assist us.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to contact our local representative, see Contact Us below.
