Welcome
Introduction
Welcome to the official web site for the Battle of Cheriton Project Ltd. The site is designed to offer visitors an overview to our activities – all focused on developing the profile of this important Civil War battlefield and enabling the battle to become an integrated part of the local community, both educational and business focused.
2004 has been the most exciting of years for us with our original vision and aspirations coming to fruition through a series of memorable events.
The Story So Far
From the sponsored march in March 2004, where thirty hard re-enactors retraced the steps of Hopton’s broken army from the battlefield to Basing House (raising nearly £3,000 on the way), through the attendance of over 600 school children to living history site visits to the spectacular battle re-enactment in June. Fantastic events, well supported by the local community.
The Future
So successful were the events last year, that a more ambitious programme is already in progress for 2005. Look out for events in Winchester, Alresford and the biggest re-enactment of the battle as the highlight of the year over the August Bank Holiday.
We have had great support from our partners this year – Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council, The Sealed Knot Society, the Battlefield Trust and Gillian Gray Knight and her family. We would be delighted to welcome any other local societies, authorities or organisations who would like to get involved in the project for 2005.
